Sunrise Association Camps are camps for children ages 3 ½ - 16. They are the only dedicated full summer day camp in the world for children with cancer and their siblings. It is a camp designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.
There are sleepaway camps that provide a great experience during the summer months, but Horizon Day Camp offers benefits that a resident camp cannot. Horizon Day Camp will provide a true camping experience while the children remain within their own familiar surroundings and continue to receive treatment at their home hospitals.
Horizon Day Camp offers a full-summer day camp from June 26– August 12 in addition to year- round camp-like programs. These additional programs take place at our campgrounds and other locations that provide exclusive use of their facilities. Additionally, our in-hospital program Horizon On Wheels allows children to experience “camp” in the hospital by providing activities for those who are awaiting treatment.
Best of all, Horizon Day Camp is offered free of charge to all children being treated for cancer and their siblings on a non-sectarian basis. By raising the needed funds from outside sources instead of charging the parents, we can help to alleviate some of the costs, and the related stress, that parents incur caring for a sick child throughout the year. Children who have received medical clearance from their physicians are welcome to attend. Though several weeks of camp programming is offered, children may register and attend any and every day they feel well enough to do so.
Nurse Position
Horizon Day Camp - Baltimore is actively hiring qualified RNs, NPs, and EMT’s to work as a part of our crucially important medical team at camp. Overseen by our resident Medical Director, with medical protocols in place, unrise is staffed with minimum two nurses each day. Nurses are scheduled for as many days at Horizon as their availability allows for, and we allow for very flexible weekly commitments, although consistent day(s) are preferable.
Our nursing team works very closely with the Medical Director, Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and Wellness Center Coordinators, who are responsible for the administrative aspect of the Horizon medical operation.
Experience in pediatrics and/or oncology is a plus, as is any experience having attended or working at camp.
Transportation is available for nurses who live far from the campgrounds as they may ride the bus with the campers from any of our designated bus stops.
