Job Description

Summary

Kennolyn seeks Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician’s Assistants for a small summer camp of 70 campers and 25 staff on Huntington Lake, CA. The camp has well supplied facilities but is 90 minutes away from the nearest hospital. Emergency services are well established in the area. Two nurses work as a team to manage camp health needs. One nurse is a paid position for the summer to maintain consistency while the other is a work-tuition trade. Most nurses work in exchange for camp tuition for children grades 5-11. In other words, your work at Kennolyn Huntington Lake allows your child to attend as a camper for free at one of our three camps – Huntington Lake overnight camp, Santa Cruz Mountains overnight camp, or Santa Cruz Mountains day camp.

Working at camp is by no means a vacation or opportunity for one on one time with your child. Camp Nursing is demanding since you are busy all day and every day (and sometimes through the night with sick campers). But it is also rewarding to be the camp mom or dad and get to know the campers, staff, and families.

What is a Camp Nurse?

Camp nursing is a challenging and unique form of nursing but is also extremely rewarding. Working at Kennolyn Huntington Lake is an opportunity to practice child- centered care in an exceptional and remote outdoor environment. It is a role that requires patients, empathy, endurance and a willingness to jump in and help wherever there is a need.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to, taking a lead in coordinating health staff and proper delegation, clinic set up and supply ordering, review of all health forms prior to the start of each session, the day to day health care of campers and staff, monitoring of infection control and cleanliness, daily medication administration, communication and collaboration with kitchen staff about specific allergies or dietary requirement, emergency response and coordination, and health promotion and education.

Camp Nurses wear many hats with a large amount of time being the camp parent attending to the emotional needs and supporting anxious or homesick kids. Sick campers may spend the night in the Health Center which can bring some sleepless nights. Overnight call and coordinating breaks during each session is shared with the other nurse on site.

The Health Center has six rooms and one shared full bathroom: an exam room, three rooms for sick campers, and two rooms for nurses. Rooms are simple 10x10 with a twin bed, end table, dresser, and wardrobe. Laundry machines are also connected to the building making it a hub of activity. While nurses do have their private room to retreat, living at camp is a rustic, communal experience. Although summer camp is an unconventional working environment, often fun and relaxed, it is important to remember all of the same standards of professionalism still apply. Before taking this position it is important to think about how you will handle these conditions and if camp nursing is for you.
