Camp Akeela is an overnight summer camp in Vermont and Wisconsin for boys and girls ages 9 - 17. Many of our campers have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or a non-verbal learning disability. Others are undiagnosed but are described as "quirky." All are very bright, charming and well-behaved boys and girls who struggle to connect with their peers. Akeela’s small, supportive
community helps campers improve their social skills, make friends, gain self-confidence and have fun!
We are looking for an experienced nurse (RN or NP) to join our outstanding health care team. Our Head Nurse has many years of experience both in our community and in hospital and school settings and is a wonderful supervisor and care-taker. Our nurses also coordinate with an outstanding local pediatrician who is on-call for us 24/7. Candidates should enjoy the outdoors, love working with children and be committed to making a difference! The nursing staff is an integral part of the camp community. We work with a company that pre-doses and packages all of our campers' medications, giving our nurses more time to enjoy camp. We encourage them to be out in camp as much as possible, fostering strong relationships with campers and staff. Akeala nurses act as medical advisors, emergency managers, medication distributors, "camp moms", friends, counselors and role models. It's an important and extremely rewarding position.
Camp Akeela’s directors Debbie (PsyD in Clinical Psychology, Yeshiva University) and Eric Sasson (MEd, Harvard University), along with a key staff of experienced professionals, are at camp to mentor and support the entire staff.
