Clearwater Camp for Girls 
 

Position: Camp Nurse

Classification: Nonexempt (Seasonal)

Reports to: Head Nurse


Position Purpose: The Camp Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff.


Of note, summer 2021 may look different due to COVID. Some of the following could be adjusted, added, or changed to meet the needs of camp.


Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Provide health care to meet the individual needs of campers and camp staff

    1. Follow all established health care policies and procedures for Clearwater Camp

    2. Distribute daily medications to campers and staff prior to meals and in the evenings

    3. Administer as-needed medications according to campers’ records

  2. Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.

    1. Assist in the setup and ongoing maintenance of the camp health center.

    2. Inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment.

  3. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and American Camp Association Standards

    1. Ensure, along with the head nurse, staff, and camper health examinations are current and on file.

    2. Prepare and utilize daily medical log in Camp Minder for treatment and medications

    3. Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.

  4. Facilitate First Aid procedures and supplies.

    1. Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, out-of-camp trips.

    2. Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.

  5. Aid in the screening of all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp, including trips.

    1. Verify health history and examination.

    2. Verify emergency authorization.

    3. Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.

    4. Conduct a health assessment that includes oral temperature, weight, and inquiry into any communicable diseases.

    5. Keep all medications used by campers and staff.

  6. Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp.

    1. Observe daily cleanliness in the food service facility and other areas throughout camp.

    2. Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Directors.



Other Job Duties:

  • Provide leadership in the camp’s risk management program.

  • Be responsible for contacting parents concerning the status of their child’s health by telephone in instances such as the following situations: a doctor visit, an injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/accident, etc.

  • Be knowledgeable of outside health resources.

  • Evaluate medical services.

  • May accompany campers off-site for clinic visits.

  • Participate enthusiastically in camp activities.

  • Attend staff meetings.

  • Communicate effectively with counselors, including working together to create a positive community and address any camper or community challenges/issues.

  • Actively work to help campers develop friendships, demonstrate respect for others, and grow in leadership and responsibility.


Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a license as required by Wisconsin State law.

  • CPR certified and current first aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency management.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.

  • Desire to work with children and young adults.

  • Community health knowledge.


Essential Functions:

  • Ability to lift/assist campers and staff.

  • Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.

  • Endurance, including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, & stretching.

  • Ability to use a computer to maintain a written record system.

  • Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain.

  • Observe and assess the sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.

  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.

  • Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.

  • Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations.

  • Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours.

  • Capable of carrying out tasks with daily exposure to the sun, heat, cold, and other environmental conditions.

  • Practice personal self-care in order to be able to fulfill responsibilities.


Job Requirements
