Job Description

Do you want to spend 5 weeks this summer among the beautiful evergreen trees of the Pacific Northwest? With a group of staff and kids who have come together to do math in the most joyful and spirited way you’ve seen?

Canada/USA Mathcamp (http://www.mathcamp.org) is a 5-week summer program for talented high school students from all over the world. The program will be held this summer from June 27 to August 3, 2024 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA, and we're seeking a Camp Nurse!

About the Role

The camp nurse is the healthcare professional for our population of 120 students (ages 13 - 18) and 30 staff (adults of all ages, all 18+), providing adjunctive care while the students and staff are away from their primary care providers. This is an ideal role for a local school/university nurse who wants to keep working during the summer. We are flexible: you can join us full time as our residential camp nurse, or as a commuter.

Residential position details

If residential, you can expect to be in office every morning from 8am to 10am, and to be on call from 10am to 8pm. You would also join in as general camp staff when free from nursing duties – we are a fun and dynamic community, and you might find this to be one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Compensation for the residential position will be $5,500; in addition we will cover transportation to/from camp (including ground transportation) up to $1000, and provide room and board for the duration of the program.

Commuter position details

The on-campus hours are 4 hours for reviewing medical records, 6 hours for staff training and orientation, and a minimum of two hours per day (typically 8am - 10am), Monday through Saturday for the duration of the program. The pay will be $40/hour for an LPN and $50/hour for an RN. Additional time (whether on-site or by responding to calls by phone) will be compensated at the same rate.

Job Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

  • reviewing each student's health record before they arrive at camp

  • organizing and supervising the regular administration of daily medications

  • daily office hours, 8am–10am, Monday through Saturday

  • assessing and treating illnesses and injuries that come up

  • when not on-site, remaining on-call to advise staff for any other issues.

In collaboration with the logistical coordinating team on staff, the camp nurse will also play a central role in addressing any potential cases of Covid-19 at camp. (Note that our Covid-19 safety plan includes a vaccine mandate for all participants.)

Hiring process

We accept applications on a rolling basis. To apply, prepare a cover letter and resume describing your interest in the role and relevant experience. Please include the name and contact information for at least one recent manager to serve as an employer reference. If you have worked in a summer camp context before (even if not so recently), please include a camp reference, either as your primary recommender or in addition.

Email inquiries with your cover letter and resume to rn-hiring24@mathcamp.org. After reviewing your materials, we will contact all candidates regarding next steps. Some applicants will proceed to a short interview (conducted over Zoom), which is our opportunity for both the candidate and the organization to assess whether the role is a good fit. We will continue to accept applications until the position is filled.
