Job Description

The Healthcare Director oversees and promotes the campers' and staff's general health and safety. They are responsible for maintaining the camp health house, administering medications and advanced first aid care, reviewing health histories, and health screening checks, keeping accurate and detailed records, and ensuring that all health and wellness standards are met. This role may facilitate the transportation of campers and staff to outside health facilities as needed. 

Camp St. Albans covers 414 wooded acres with over five miles of trails, all surrounding beautiful Lake Devereaux. The property is known for its unique Viking Boats and the gnomes that inhabit the camp. Our site primarily focuses on traditional camp activities such as arts and crafts, archery, swimming, and boating. Campers can choose from a variety of creative programs including outdoor survival skills, space discovery, and woodworking.

The full pay range for this position is $186 - $196 per day, with the starting rate dependent on previous employment at GSWW camps. This seasonal position will be from June 8th to August 19th, 2025.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Facilitate the day-to-day healthcare operations to ensure the general health and safety of campers and staff, including routine medication and medical needs, assessing injuries and illness, maintaining all medical records, providing off-site transportation as needed, and follow all healthcare policies and procedures.  
  • Oversee all medication management for the camp including collection & storage, distribution, maintain daily medication logs, and train staff on medication distribution and storage procedures during off-site trips or as needed 
  • Provide communication to camp staff and camper families as needed around camper health needs and concerns 
  • Facilitate weekly health check process during camper arrival, including verifying health histories, and emergency authorizations, identify any observable illness or injury, and medication collection 
  • Observe and evaluate the Camper Support Specialist, scheduling weekly one-on-one meetings to deliver feedback 
  • Facilitate staff training and orientation on camp’s healthcare procedures including staff’s role in healthcare & first aid, health center procedures, daily health assessment of campers, use of emergency medications, and health-related check-in processes for appropriate staff 
  • Manage the health care supplies and equipment in the health center and around camp, including initial and end-of-season inventory, and submit orders for new supplies and equipment as needed 
  • Assist in the management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the Camp Director 
  • Support and participate in implementing all camp activities such as meals, games, campfires, etc. 
  • Carry out established duties for general camp operations including check-in and check-out, bus supervision, camp cleaning, season opening and closing tasks, and completion of necessary paperwork

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of and commitment to fostering environments that prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, racial justice, and belonging

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to ensure effective interactions with individuals at all levels and backgrounds, with the ability to work under pressure

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards 
  • Knowledge of common injuries and illnesses and their treatment suitable to the age or participants and staff and activities offered at the camp 
  • Knowledge and experience in community health 
  • Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and caregiver letters 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to navigate technology programs and platforms independently including Microsoft 365; ability/willingness to learn new technologies, with CampMinder experience strongly preferred 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • This position supervises the Camper Support Specialist 
  • This position supervises all staff in their role as first aiders 

Education and Experience Required 

  • At least 21 years of age 
  • Experience working with youth 6-17 years old 
  • State license or is registered as a physician, physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, LVN, paramedic, or EMT  
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record and willingness to transport campers and staff in a 12-passenger van 

Preferred Skills and Experience 

  • State license or is registered as a physician, physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse 
  • Experience delivering healthcare in a camp setting 
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout program 

Other Qualifications 

  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain 
  • Current certification of Youth Mental Health First Aid or willingness to obtain 
  • Satisfactory results from a background check
