Job Description

Title: Nurse

Reports to: Head Nurse and Director of AF Camp

General Summary

AF Camp is seeking a Nurse to help oversee all aspects of the AF Camp.

Health Center. Reporting to the Head Nurse and the Director of Camp AF Camp and working closely with the Health Center Team, contracted nurse practitioners and camp doctors, and AF Camp Senior Team, the Nurse is responsible for ensuring the health, wellness and safety of AF Camp campers and team members. We pay a competitive salary and offer many other enticing benefits, such as free room, board, and laundry service. Please do not worry about having in-state credentials; as long as you have a certification in any state, you are eligible to begin work at AF Camp. We will pay for your state certification as soon as you begin at camp. The dates are 6/20/21-7/18/21.

AF Camp serves ~250 campers from Achievement First Schools (grades 4-9) over 1 two-week session during the summer. At AF Camp, we believe that an overnight summer camp experience:

  1. Provides an opportunity for campers from Achievement First Schools to explore, learn, and have fun in a safe, tight-knit community;

  2. Increases campers’ social, emotional, and non-cognitive skills (e.g., self-confidence, responsibility, independence, and curiosity), which are essential to college and life success;

  3. Provides a tremendous summer job opportunity/experience for AF alumni and rising 12th graders from Achievement First Schools; and

  4. Creates an additional pipeline for strong, diverse teacher candidates for AF by providing a space for counselors (potential teachers) to work directly with AF students.

AF Camp offers the following program activities for campers:

  • Athletics: soccer, flag football, basketball, tennis baseball, kickball, street hockey;

  • Waterfront: swim instruction, general swim, sailing, kayaking, canoeing;

  • Adventure: nature, overnight camping, climbing, and low ropes;

  • Inter-Arts: arts & crafts, pottery, theater, dance, music;

  • STEM: rocketry, natural/environmental science;

  • Discovery: self-reflection, journaling, team-building; and

  • Intensives: improvisation, photography, puppeteering, cooking, chess, spoken word, hiking, wacky sports, African dance, step dance, and yoga.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Camp nurses are responsible for the health, wellness, safety, and care of all members of the AF Camp community as well as related administrative duties. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Administering camper prescription medications as directed;

  2. Dispensing over-the-counter medications as appropriate;

  3. Assessing campers and counselors who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed;

  4. Assisting in stabilizing campers and counselors requiring transportation to medical facilities;

  5. Contacting parents of ill or injured campers and counselors (if appropriate) and updating them as necessary;

  6. Documenting all injuries and care rendered. This involves documentation of all over-the counter medicines, first aid treatment, and communication with parents, doctors/nurse practitioners or any other off-camp facilities;

  7. Maintaining inventory of supplies;

  8. Keeping the Health Center clean and organized; and

  9. Working directly with all Health Center team members and nurses.


  • A minimum of 1 year of nursing in a professional setting;

  • All necessary credentials and certifications;

  • Experience working with and/or desire to work with elementary and middle school students (grades 4-9);

  • Ability to communicate effectively with families;

  • Dedication to the mission of AF Camp and to social justice;

  • Desire to work in an outdoor, camp setting;

  • An “all hands” mentality (i.e., willingness to help ensure we provide the best experience for campers);

  • A willingness to receive and implement feedback in order to grow and develop;

  • A willingness to develop her/his leadership capabilities;

  • An openness to growing her/his confidence and presence;

  • A personality and character that exudes flexibility, self-awareness, integrity, curiosity, kindness, and patience;

  • Availability to work for the entire camper season (~ 4 weeks, including, team training) without interruption.
