Sustainable Learning, a NY-based nonprofit organization, is searching for a health director for our Sustainable Summer program at Cornell University.

Sustainable Summer designs and facilitates environmental leadership programs for high school students. Our programs focus on project-based learning, applied sustainability, and personal growth and discovery. Our program staff is key to both our organization’s and our students’ success. Position Summary:

The Health Director is the live-in medical lead for our 12-night residential summer program. This person oversees all health matters related to a summer program of approximately 40 students ages 15 - 18 and is part of a 5-person program staff, all residing in a residence hall on Cornell’s campus.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • review of participant confidential medical histories to address restrictions and special needs; 
  • initial health screening of participants; 
  • daily health surveillance of participants; 
  • maintain procedures for providing basic first aid, handling medical emergencies, including outbreaks and procedures for response to allegations of child abuse; 
  • maintain provisions for medical, nursing and emergency medical services; 
  • manage storage and oversight of participant medications
  • maintain medical log; 
  • reporting of illness and injuries, including participant abuse/allegations to the Department of Health within 24 hours;
  • basic first aid
  • emergency medical response

Qualifications: 

  • Current EMT certification or a NYS-licensed RN or PA;
  • Current CPR certification (not to exceed one year from the date of course completion);
  • Legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • A criminal background check will be required prior to employment.
  • Willing to work a non-traditional schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Nice To Have: 

  • Prior experience as a teacher, youth wilderness guide, mentor, education professional, camp counselor, coach, or similar experience working with high school age students. 
  • Knowledge of sustainability and sustainable development. 
  • Experience working with diverse student populations or cross cultural experience.

Compensation: 

  • Wages of $1500
  • Accommodations in a private room on campus during program dates.
  • Three meals daily in on-campus dining facilities during program dates.
  • Reimbursement for travel expenses.

Employment Dates & Details:

This position has a residential requirement with dates of July 6 - 19. Review of participant health forms and some additional preparation (inventory of supplies, etc) prior to July 6 is necessary.

Time Off: 

  • This position involves 13 consecutive days of programming. Mornings and evenings are the busiest times of day (overseeing medication administration). Otherwise, the specific day-to-day will vary depending on healthcare needs. Other program staff possess emergency medical training allowing for appropriate time off each day, however it is a requirement of the New York State Department of Health that the health director is “on-site” and available in an emergency 24/7.
