CAMP GOALS
General Responsibility
To assist in all areas of health and safety and be on-duty in the Health Center when necessary.
Specific Responsibilities ~ under the auspices of Camp Director and/or Health Center Director
- Ensure each staff member and camper has on file a health history and examination form, as required.
- Review camper and staff individual health plans and communicate the information out as necessary or advised by Health Center Director and/or Camp Director.
- Conduct health screenings for arriving campers and staff, and during the session for those going on trips out-of-camp.
- Report all health center admissions to Health Center Director and/or Camp Directors
- Telephone contact with parents of those campers admitted to/discharged from health center or seen at off- site clinic/hospital/dentist
- Know resources in community for dealing with emergencies
- Always be available/reachable for emergencies (unless out of camp on time-off, etc.)
- Respond (not react) appropriately if there is an emergency/urgency.
- Conduct inventory of supplies and let Camp Director(s) know ahead of time when re-suppling is necessary, ensuring timely arrival.
- Administer all medications and treatments according to physician’s standing orders and directives listed in the camper health forms.
- Establish and follow appropriate medical routines including record keeping, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved standing orders.
- Communicate with Head Cook when there is a patient in the Health Center and needs meals prepared. Discuss any specific food needs.
- Check and issue first-aid kits: make sure they are kept full and complete throughout summer.

Specific Responsibilities (cont’d) ~ under the auspices of Camp Director and/or Health Center Director.
- Keep Health Center clean including bathrooms, entrance, treatment room, camper bedrooms, and living room. Including having beds and linens ready for patients.
- Meet with Health Center Director and Camp Director together to review standing orders, screening policies, and list of responsible staff trained in First Aid/CPR/Epi Pen.
- Participate in and lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety, CPR, first aid, Epi Pen administration, and use of universal precautions for infection control alongside Health Center Director.
- Guide the counselors regarding their responsibilities in assessing and reporting illness, injury, or unsafe practices or conditions that might contribute to camper or staff accidents. Also, in reporting camper’s dietary habits such a failure to eat a variety of foods, rapid weight loss, any symptoms or disturbances such as restless sleep, nail biting, thumb sucking, poor hygiene, bed wetting/soiling, withdrawal or homesickness.
- Work directly with the Wilderness Trip Staff ensuring that the health and safety of campers and staff participating in the Wilderness Trip Program is not compromised
- Prepare a summary and evaluation of the camp season including inventories, camper reports on health problems, and make recommendations for the following season.
- Monitor health of all staff; weekly check of all kitchen staff
- Monitor/evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions and suggest modifications that would create more healthful conditions in camp
- See that all ACA medical standards comply.
- These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ability to work under the guidance of Camp Director and/or Health Center Director/RN
- Ability to work cooperatively with Camp Directors, Health Center Director/RN and other nursing staff.
- Ability to work with thoughtful, respectful and confidential communication and in trust with Camp Directors and Health Center staff.
- The ability to communicate and work with many groups (different ages and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers/staff.
- Ability to receive feedback and communicate respectfully.
- Lift/assist campers or staff
- Read prescriptions and health exams from physicians
- Get to remote camp locations and distances on unpaved paths quickly
- Use telephone and be polite and thoughtful when speaking with parents, health care providers, etc.
- Ability to direct others in an emergency
- Ability to react calmly, communicate and think clearly in an urgent or emergent situation.
- Ability to lead by example ~ both campers and staff ~ in health-related issues including, but not limited to healthy choices, self-care and living habits.
- Ability to assume responsibility, to think objectively, to seek help, when necessary, to “see the big picture” of camp life, etc.
- Ability to remain level-headed and quick-thinking under “crisis”
- Emotional resiliency
- Effective adaption to changes in schedule and work assignment
- The ability to effectively interact with others, especially children, in camp’s youth-centered environment
Salary is negotiable and starts at $2300 + travel stipend ($300-$600).
