Job Description

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Each summer, 3,000 children attend five Fresh Air Fund camps on a 2,000-acre site in Fishkill, NY. Close to 2,000 young people participate in year-round educational programs at camp and in New York City. The Fresh Air Fund is looking to hire Camp Nurses to work at our sleepaway camps for the upcoming summer season.

Camp Nurses are responsible for all health related care of campers and staff at our five camps. Duties include: medication distribution; health education teaching and maintenance; emergency care; referrals to camp doctor; nursing care of campers and staff requiring short-term bed rest; communication of pertinent medical information to The Fresh Air Fund office and parents; and maintaining medical records and logs. Camp Nurses are the primary medical staff in camp and report directly to the Camp Director and Senior Camp Nurse. There is a doctor on site/on call at all times that works closely with our Senior Camp Nurse. Hospitals and urgent care facilities are nearby.

Nurses are provided with private rooms at their assigned camp and eat meals in the camp dining hall. Each nurse is encouraged to participate in the general camp program as much as possible. All nurses will take part in an orientation and will receive trainings during employment.

Summer salary: Salaries are commensurate with experience. Room and board are provided as well as a travel stipend for staff traveling 300 miles or more to camp.

Employment Dates: 6/14 - 8/16. (While we prefer nurses to work the full camp season, we can consider half season employment.)

We will pay for the necessary fees to obtain a New York State license if an applicant does not have one. For graduating nurses, we will pay the cost of the New York State Work Permit for Graduating Nurses.

Job Requirements

- Must be a licensed RN or LPN preferably with at least one year of post-graduate experience OR must be a graduate of a Nursing Program

- Must have or be able to obtain a New York State license. We will pay for the necessary fees to obtain a license if an applicant does not have one.
