CAMP NURSE

Position Summary
Camp Nursing Staff work in our camp health centers and are responsible for all health-related care of campers and staff. Camp Nurses are the primary medical staff in camp and administer medication, assess medical needs and provide emergency care as needed. Nursing Assistants work alongside our Camp Nurses and assist them with daily routines and camper supervision in the infirmary.
The Camp Nurses reports to the Health and Safety Director.
Responsibilities

Responsible for all health-related care of campers and staff at camp. Duties include: medication distribution; health education teaching and maintenance; emergency care; referrals to camp doctor; nursing care of campers and staff requiring short-term bed rest; communication of pertinent medical information to The Fresh Air Fund office and parents; and maintaining medical records and logs.

Conduct physical screening of all staff and children and reviews their health histories and physical examinations within twenty-four hours of their arrival at camp.

Camp Nurses are the primary medical staff in camp and report directly to the Camp Director and Senior Camp Nurse.

Follow standing orders issues by Medical Director.

Assess medical needs of any child or staff member entering the infirmary and provide treatment as necessary or refers to medical facility, hospital or specialist.

Administer medications as prescribed.

Log all treatments and medications administered in staff or camper logbook and in each individual’s file.

Make periodic checks to ascertain that kitchen, dining hall, bathrooms and cabins are clean and sanitary.

On-call at all times except during scheduled time off.

Communicate with Senior Camp Nurse on all serious matters.

Following consultation with the Camp Director, make mandated reports to Dutchess County Department of Health about: injuries or illnesses which result in death or which require resuscitation or admission to a hospital; injuries which involve bone fractures, lacerations requiring sutures; physical or sexual abuse allegation; illnesses suspected of being water, food, or air-borne, or spread by contact; an epi-pen administration and potential rabies contact with animals.

Participate in camp orientation and trainings throughout the summer.

Nurses are provided with private rooms at their assigned camp and eat meals in the camp dining hall. They are encouraged to participate in the general camp program as much as possible.

Time off will be approved by the Senior Camp Nurse and in coordination with the Camp Director and all other camp nurses on Sharpe Reservation.

Understand that campers come first and decisions should be made in the best interest of the campers.

Explain and enforce the policies, traditions, and rules of camp.

Strive to work in a cooperative manner with fellow staff to achieve goals of the program.

Invest time with campers to meet their needs, challenge their capabilities, and serve as a role model during their time at camp.

Assume responsibility for the use and care of camp equipment and facilities.

Be totally familiar with emergency procedures and follow them when necessary.

Other duties as assigned.
Employment Period: June 12, 2023 – August 18, 2023
Compensation: Salaries start at $9,000 and are commensurate with experience
