Job Description

The Beyond Akeela Nurse is the leader of the healthcare team at Beyond Akeela. They are responsible for medication administration, parent communication surrounding camper health, and triaging a variety of health situations. They will make recommendations to the Directors on adjustments to camp operations that will improve the global health of the camp community, as needed. The Nurse is responsible for medication and treatment logging, and ensuring the health care practices followed are on par or exceed the standards set by the American Camp Association and local state guidelines.

The nurse works under the standing orders and guidance of Beyond Akeela’s Health Care Consultant, a licensed Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts, to make decisions on treatment plans for each camper. They are also responsible for checking in on the health of staff members, and helping the Directors ensure that staff are physically and mentally prepared to work.

Job Requirements

A Qualified Nurse…

  • Has an active RN or NP license. Beyond Akeela will help with license transfer fees to MA, if needed.
  • Has multiple years of experience with pediatrics.
  • Has BLS certification and is confident assessing a variety of medical situations and making appropriate health care decisions for teens and adults.
  • Is well versed in medication administration, including controlled substances.
  • Remains calm and is confident making sound decisions in high stress emergency situations.
  • Experience in fast paced work settings that require significant amounts of time on their feet.
  • Values the importance of building relationships with campers and is excited about spending time with teens outside of the health center.
  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Thrives in a collaborative decision-making environment and is comfortable making big-picture decisions that support the overall health of the community.
  • Manages their time well and is comfortable balancing a variety of tasks and responsibilities.
  • Has the ability to live and work in a stimulating and high stress work environment with irregular hours including early mornings and evenings.
  • Must be willing to live in a communal dorm environment with other young adult staff members (with private bedroom).
